Top 10 Board Games to Play Online

August 20, 2025 by Kevin Kelleher in card games

Board Game Arena offers 1,122 board games online in digitized form, which you can play against real people and even your own friends. And it’s technically free to play, though you will need a membership to initiate most of your own games. Here is a Top Ten List of some of the very best, and my personal favorite, games to play:

(Ratings and Complexity taken from BoardGameGeek.com)

10: AGRICOLA

Rating: 7.9/10 Complexity: 3.63/5 1-4 players 1 hour

An exceedingly satisfying medieval farm simulator and worker placement game. It has a pretty steep learning curve, but once you wrap your mind around how it works, it’s a beautiful system that’s fun to play over and over again. The addition of extra, optional cards can add even more depth. It’s also quite pleasant to play solo, too.

Often has open tables ready to play, but note how they plan to involve the cards or not!

9. MEMOIR ‘44

Rating: 7.5/10 Complexity: 2.27/5 2 players 40 minutes

A straightforward World War II battle simulator. You’ve got infantry, you’ve got tank divisions, and you’ve got artillery. You play cards from your hand to issue orders to your units. Each game you play is based on a particular battle from history, with a special map, special rules, and sometimes special game pieces. Complete your mission objectives and/or just kill enough of the enemy to win. Since the scenarios are asymmetrical, players usually take turns playing each side for a fair overall game.

Occasionally has an open table ready to play.

8. HEAT: PEDAL TO THE METAL

Rating: 8/10 Complexity: 2.2/5 1-8 players 40 minutes

An incredible car racing board game! Play cards from your hand to accelerate down the straightaways, but be careful to decelerate around tight turns so you don’t spin out! This very clever game system, which uses a deck of cards to simulate a roaring engine, is a bit tricky to master, but is as evocative as it is fun to play.

7. KINGDOMINO

Rating: 7.3/10 Complexity: 1.23/5 2-4 players 11 minutes

A very simple to learn and fun to play tile-laying game where you’re building out a little kingdom, grouping together areas of like-terrain to score points. Create a pleasing and profitable kingdom for yourself as you compete against the other players for the tiles you need.

Often has open tables ready to play.

6. KING OF TOKYO

Rating: 7.1/10 Complexity: 1.49/5 2-6 players 14 minutes

A board game classic by master game designer, Dr. Richard Garfield. Here, each player is a fearsome and enormous monster, and it’s everyone-versus-everyone in a drag-out, knock-down battle for supremacy over the city of Tokyo, Japan. Just a supremely well-designed game that has amazing replay value. And Board Game Arena even has all the expansions available for it!

Virtually always has open tables looking for players, but note which expansions they might be using!

5. TOY BATTLE

Rating: 7.6/10 Complexity: 1.49/5 2 players 5 minutes

For a game that’s so fast and easy to play, Toy Battle nevertheless offers a surprisingly rich tactical experience and deeper strategy than you would guess possible. Impressively simple design and fun execution.

Often has open tables ready to play.

4. SUSHI GO

Rating: 7/10 Complexity: 1.6/5 2-5 players 5 minutes

A famous staple of many board game collections, and rightfully so. But now you don’t even have to shuffle up the cards to play! This cute little card drafting game has you collecting and grouping pieces of sushi to score points. It sounds deceptively easy, but there is plenty of room for craft and strategy!

Often has open tables ready to play.

3. INCAN GOLD

Rating: 6.8/10 Complexity: 1.12/5 3-8 players 7 minutes

One of our favorite palate-cleansers, this press-your-luck game is so fast and so fun it’ll leave your heads spinning! You are exploring ancient ruins, and the deeper in you venture, the more valuable gems you can bring back to camp. BUT, the further you go, the greater the danger. How much will you risk your own life for profit? And will it be enough to win?!

2. FOR SALE

Rating: 7.3/10 Complexity: 1.25/5 3-6 players 8 minutes

This real-estate game has you bidding on properties in the first half of the game, and then flipping those properties in the second half, trying to squeeze as much value as you can out of them. Its simple and elegant system unites cards and coins into a beautifully designed game that’s super easy to learn and fun to play over and over again.

1. 6 NIMMT

Rating: 7/10 Complexity: 1.19/5 2-10 players 14 minutes

6 Nimmt takes the #1 spot by hitting it out of the park on every front: it’s easy to learn, it’s fun to play, it can accommodate almost any number of players, it takes about the perfect amount of time to play (neither too short nor too long), and it has basically infinite replay value.

The whole game is just a deck of cards with numbers written on them, 1-104. There will be four rows of cards on the table, and each player has a hand of cards. Players select a card from their hands, which gets revealed simultaneously, and then the revealed cards are added to the rows on the table, in ascending order. But there’s a twist! If your card gets placed as the sixth card in the row, you have to take that whole row – and not by drawing the cards, but by subtracting their point value from your score. Play continues in rounds until a player’s point score dips below zero. Then the player with the highest point total wins!

This is such a popular game that there are virtually always tables open looking for players.
